It's Olivia de Havilland's 96th birthday! Happy Birthday, Olivia!
Olivia's birthday has been an occasion I have personally celebrated since at least 1989 when I marked the event by staying up past my childhood bedtime until 1am to see Entertainment Tonight give acknowledgement of her birthday on television. Since that time, my traditions of honoring Olivia's birthday have included reorganizing my classic film scrapbooks, seeing "The Adventures of Robin Hood"on the big screen at the Tennessee Theater, and, a few years ago, hosting an Olivia de Havilland film festival at a local coffee house in Knoxville, TN called the "Time Warp Tea Room." That particular evening ended with approximately 30 people sitting around this old coffee shop watching "The Heiress"on TCM and cheering as Catharine Sloper ascended the stairs leaving Maurice Townsend screaming outside in the rain!
My tribute to Olivia this year is a relaunch of this website! Over the last 2 and a half years, Olivia de Havilland - Lady of the Classic Cinema has served as an internet and social media connection between fans of Olivia! So, today, I celebrate Olivia with a new website dedicated to Olivia's career and her life, today!
Happy 96th birthday, Olivia!
Watching Olivia's films has generally been a right of passage for each July 1. Since her film career spans from 1935-1979, I thought I would highlight a few that you could enjoy over this weekend to celebrate and honor Olivia.
The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
Are you in love or want to feel that teenage love again? See "The Adventures of Robin Hood." Olivia is breathtakingly beautiful in that film and there is almost nothing on screen that compares to the balcony scene with Errol Flynn's "Robin Hood."
To Each His Own (1947)
Do you want to see a film full of emotion and a performance that is breathtaking from beginning to end? See Olivia's first Oscar performance, "To Each his Own," if you're lucky enough to actually own a copy of it. Olivia's acting chops are on full display from the first shot of this film until the emotional end! It's a great one to share with a mother, grandmother, or other important women in your life!
Do you want to see one of Olivia's finest moments on screen? Watch Olivia's second Academy Award winning performance in "The Heiress." This film is filled with angst and emotion but Olivia comes out giving a wonderfully strong and memorable performance.
My Cousin Rachel (1952)
Do you want to watch a film that leaves you questioning the ending, questioning every character, and trying to figure out if Olivia is the good girl or the bad girl? Watch "My Cousin Rachel." This thought provoking film will keep you guessing until the surprising end. Olivia is stunning in this film and gives an acting range that covers the gamut of emotions, while leaving us questioning every motive of Rachel!
Do you want to see two great actresses work off of one another and create some fantastic cinematic history? See any Olivia de Havilland/Bette Davis film. The two became great friends off screen and on-screen worked off of one another to create memorable moments.
Before you watch their movies, here are a couple of great television moments between them. The first one is dedicated to my friend, Lara, who can never talk about Olivia without mentioning this moment! Thanks for sharing this with me, Lara, and for the hours of conversation and laughter spawned from this unforgettable moment!
Here is another great TV moment between Bette Davis and Olivia de Havilland. The first 9 minutes features their remarkable talent as dramatic actresses. The last minute features their incredible ability to work together to steal a scene and create a wonderful comedic moment! Enjoy.
